The Science and Safety of Cannabinoids
As increasing evidence for the advantages of using CBD accumulates, the U.S. government has become more open to CBD use, and more committed to understanding how CBD may improve health or quality of life.
In fact, The United States Department of Health and Human Services actually has a patent on cannabinoids
– Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants, US Patent 6630507.
In short, the patent explains,
“Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke or trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Non-psychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.”
The World Health Organization’s Stance
The World Health Organization (WHO) stated there’s no known addiction potential associated with CBD.
Similarly, studies on CBD dependence conducted on mice showed that while there was evidence of THC dependency, there was no evidence that suggests the same for CBD.
Another benefit of CBD may be its applications with anxiety and depression. Studies show that CBD may help people who struggle with a variety of forms of anxiety, ranging from situational stress to general anxiety disorder. It also has been found to help relieve pain and may be an alternative to prescription drugs. This combination of relief for pain and anxiety has led to speculation that CBD may help treat drug dependence, PTSD, and conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis.
In addition to treating these conditions, CBD also shows promise to help many Americans improve their quality of life. CBD may have applications with conditions like arthritis, sleep, and even diabetes. The important thing to remember, again, is that CBD is no cure-all, research is limited, and anyone considering natural remedies should talk to their doctor.
More research needs to be done on CBD, but there are many positive signs that CBD can help people feel better. The endorsement from the World Health Organization will only accelerate growing interest in the therapeutic potential of cannabis on conditions that affect so many. Just keep in mind that in any emerging space, especially as it relates to your health, it’s important to do your research and protect yourself from bad information.
World Anti Doping Agency
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is a foundation created by the International Olympic Committee. Its purpose is to prevent and control the unauthorized or suspicious use of enhancing drugs such as steroids, androstenedione, and erythropoietin.
CBD has been included in the list of banned substances for as long as anyone could remember, primarily because of its federal interdiction. This changed in January 2018 when cannabidiol was officially dismissed from the list. Now, athletes around the world can use the compound for anything from recovery to pre-performance aid.
When an important foundation like WADA openly states that athletes can use CBD in the most prestigious gathering in human existence, you know times are changing for the better. While the WADA made it clear the compound has been removed from the banned substance list, governments around the world will have to absorb this information and follow up with their own set of policies.
